Imagine for a moment that your property tax wasn't based on the value of your house as a whole, but calculated at a different rate for each room. Now imagine you have a spouse and four children -- and you must keep a log of how much time each of you spends in each room in order to figure out your tax bill.
That's how many businesses owner feel right now, AWB President Don Brunell writes in his weekly column.
Few people
may realize it, but 41 states levy a tax on the income earned by nonresident employees who visit their state -- even if it's just for a conference.
It's an administrative nightmare, particularly for employers with multiple locations or employees who travel frequently.
(Of the 41 states, 24 levy the tax from the very first day someone visits.)
Fortunately, there is a solution to the mess -- legislation called the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act.
It's already passed in the U.S. House. The Senate should pass it quickly, Brunell writes, and send it to the president for his signature.
